Alnylam Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Isis Pharmaceuticals, Inc. announced today that, as a result of the newly formed alliance Regulus has established with sanofi-aventis, each company will receive a payment of $1.8 million from Regulus. State laws and policies governing the storage and use of surplus blood samples taken from newborns as part of the routine health screening process range from explicit to non-existent, leaving many parents ill-informed about how their babies' left over blood might be used, according to a team led by a member of the Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics, in collaboration with researchers from the University of Utah. A report on their analysis of the subject is published March 28 in the journal Pediatrics.

Any health care reform legislation must support the role of nurses in building a better system that provides the highest standard of care that is not only safer but is also likely to save money (Mary Nailer and Mark Paly, 12/10).
AstraZeneca, the global biopharmaceutical company, has donated $3.8 million worth of prescription medicines to AmeriCares for chronically ill Americans who rely on safety net clinics for their medical care. The donation is one of the largest AmeriCares received in the past year for its domestic aid deliveries.
