Sosei Group Corporation, a biopharmaceutical company, today announces the assignment of the drug discovery programme, SD281 and its analogues, to Biocopea Limited, a UK biotechnology company and subsidiary of PepTcell Limited. These compounds, based on a metabolite of a well-known drug, were shown by Sosei to have pronounced anti-inflammatory properties.
A new clinical study shows that substituting walnuts for monounsaturated fat in a Mediterranean diet improves, and even restores, endothelial function (the property of arteries to dilate in order to meet an increased demand of blood, for instance due to a physical effort). Walnuts also reduce harmful cell adhesion molecules which are associated with atherosclerosis, commonly known as hardening of the arteries. These dual effects enhance the circulatory system, therefore aiding in the prevention of heart disease.
Twenty-three years ago a harmless gut bacterium called E. coli developed the ability to kill people through food poisoning, bloody diarrhoea and kidney failure. Normally E. coli bacteria live in the intestine and don't pose any danger, but some varieties can cause fatal food poisoning.
More than 900 scientists, parents and activists from around the world who are focused on understanding the causes of autism and finding treatments for the developmental disorder will gather in Seattle May 3-5 to share the latest research findings at the sixth annual International Meeting for Autism Research.
