In this wide-ranging interview with Kaiser Health News, the Heritage Foundation's Stuart Butler talks about the proposal to have the federal Office of Personnel Management (OPM) have a role in expanding insurance coverage to more Americans; the increasingly heated debate over the roles of the federal government and the states in implementing any legislation: and the merits - or demerits - of an individual mandate.
New research published in the January issue of the Journal of the American College of Surgeons shows that morbidly obese patients are at higher risk than normal weight patients for complications after colectomy ¨C surgical removal of all or part of the colon ¨C for the treatment of cancer.
A small clinical trial led by researchers at UC San Diego School of Medicine and VA San Diego Healthcare System (VASDHS) found that patients with advanced heart failure and type 2 diabetes showed improved mitochondrial structure after three months of treatment with epicatechin-enriched cocoa. Epicatechin is a flavonoid found in dark chocolate.
More than 48 million people in the U.S. undergo surgery each year, and for decades the focus has been on making sure patients do not consume any food or drinks in the hours leading up to the surgery.
Following House passage of the healthcare repeal, a Republican senator used the GOP's weekly address to urge the upper chamber to scrap the law. "Ask yourself - are you better off or worse off now that the healthcare law has been on the books for almost a year?" Sen. John Barrasso (R-Wyo.) said. Barrasso said the new House Republican majority had "kept its promise" to voters by advancing a repeal of the healthcare law. "Now it's the Senate's turn," he said.
