In a special report on water the Economist examines the causes of and growing concerns over increasing scarcity around the world.
Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine report a three-fold increase in the use of minimally invasive surgery across the nation for patients with pancreatic disease. Although adaptation of MIS for this difficult-to-reach gland is recent, the growing trend points to improved patient outcomes, such as reduced bleeding and infections. Now published online, the paper will appear in the March print edition of JAMA Surgery.
When a research team in China evaluated the efficacy and safety of using mesenchymal stem cells expanded from the bone marrow of non-self-donors to treat patients experiencing poor graft function after receiving transplants of non-self-donated blood stem cells (allo-HSCT), they found that the mesenchymal stem cells were both safe and effective for treating primary and secondary PGF.
Researchers now have a much clearer understanding of how mutations in a single gene can produce the complex cognitive deficits characteristic of Fragile X Syndrome, the most common inherited form of intellectual disability.
A clinical trial led by UC San Francisco has found that when pregnant women are educated about their choices on prenatal genetic testing, the number of tests actually drops, even when the tests are offered with no out-of-pocket costs.
