In an era of soft drink bans and restrictions on junk food ads, students at the Johns Hopkins University schools of medicine and nursing are recommending a different approach to aid the more than 170 million Americans who are overweight or obese. By publicly committing to basic tenets of healthy living — regular exercise, eating a balanced diet and managing stress — future nurses and physicians are challenging peers and practicing medical professionals to model healthy behaviors for their patients.
Enhancements in clinical care and patient safety, medical research and nursing initiatives are at the core of a new affiliation agreement signed on Aug. 27 by Johns Hopkins Medicine International, Baltimore, USA, and Hospital Moinhos de Vento of Porto Alegre, one of Brazil's leaders in health care delivery and innovation.
Researchers at The Forsyth Institute have discovered that the transport mechanisms for serotonin - the chemical substance involved in transmitting signals between neurons, and which has a role in anxiety and mood disorders - play a key role in determining where organs are positioned in the body during embryonic development.
