The Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania has been awarded $1.5 million by The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute to launch the Mrs. A and Mr. B Project to study health care disparities among people with disabilities. A collaborative research effort with Virtual Ability, Inc., the study aims to provide patients with information that will help them make more informed decisions about their medical care.
A large clinical trial looking at the cancer preventive actions of aspirin is underway. The seven year study will include six regional centers from Victoria including Ballarat, Bendigo, Geelong, Warrnambool, Traralgon and Shepparton. The ASPirin for Reducing Events in the Elderly (ASPREE) study will involve about 19,000 participants from Australia and the United States.
The small lifestyle choices we make each day add up when it comes to heart health. In a new two-pronged study being presented at the American College of Cardiology's 68th Annual Scientific Session, people who spent less time watching TV and regularly ate an energy-rich breakfast showed significantly less plaque and stiffness in their arteries, indicating a lower chance of developing heart disease or suffering a stroke.
A new research technique, pioneered by Dr. Maria Angela Franceschini, will be published in JoVE (Journal of Visualized Experiments) on March 14th. Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School have developed a non-invasive optical measurement system to monitor neonatal brain activity via cerebral metabolism and blood flow.
