The researcher Gabriela Debesa, member of the research group at Simbiosis led by Andrés Moya at the Foundation for the Promotion of Health and Biomedical Research of Valencia Region (Fisabio), studied the relationship of the intestinal microbiota with colon cancer in patients with Lynch Syndrome (a hereditary illness that predisposes the development of cancer) using tissue samples in formalin and conserved in paraffin.
The Catalysis Foundation for Health (Catalysis), a 501 (c) (3) non-profit entity dedicated to developing sustainable diagnostics for the developing world, announced today that it has received a $5 million grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. The grant money will be used to discover new tuberculosis (TB) biomarkers that can be used to improve diagnostic tests and potentially develop more effective TB treatments.
BD (Becton, Dickinson and Company)announced today that it signed a definitive agreement to acquire HandyLab, Inc., an Ann Arbor, Michigan-based company that develops and manufactures molecular diagnostic assays and automation platforms. The acquisition is subject to regulatory approvals and is expected to close during the first quarter of fiscal year 2010. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius has announced $82 million in awards to help bolster the country's nursing workforce. Administered by HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), the awards will provide financial support to nurses and nursing students in exchange for service at health care facilities with a shortage of nurses.
