Cases of diabetes and pre-diabetes in the United States have nearly doubled since 1988, suggests new research from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, with obesity apparently to blame for the surge. The researchers also found that the burden of the disease has not hit all groups equally, with alarming increases in diabetes in blacks, Hispanics and the elderly.
The search by scientists to find ways to combat obesity continues. Recently, investigators have been exploring whether they can engage the lymphatic system to help regulate obesity-induced inflammation of fat (adipose) tissue and restore systemic metabolic fitness.
Primary ciliary dyskinesia (PCD) is a rare, genetic respiratory tract disorder leading to progressive pulmonary dysfunction. It exhibits many problems typical for orphan diseases: delayed diagnosis, limited evidence-based knowledge etc. The European Union is funding BESTCILIA (Better Experimental Screening and Treatment for Primary Ciliary Dyskinesia) to introduce uniform guidelines for PCD treatment and diagnosis across Europe.
