According to Chinese media sources a farmer who reported bird flu outbreaks to the central government has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for fraud and blackmail.
A new kind of knee surgery is providing much needed relief for patients in the greater Houston area. For many years, anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstructions have been frequently performed to correct instability in the knee, however many patients never return to their pre-injury level of activity following surgery. That is changing, says orthopaedic surgeon Dr. William Hayes, because surgeons are now addressing injuries to the anterolateral ligament (ALL) in the knee as well.
When it comes to transplant rejection, some organs are far trickier than others. Some transplantable organs, such as the liver, are readily accepted by the recipient's immune system, rarely triggering an immune response and rejection
About 10 million people in the United States alone-from troops returning from war to students with music blasting through headphones-are suffering from impairing noise-induced hearing loss.
"Over my 22 years in Congress, programs that support child survival around the world have enjoyed bipartisan support and have saved millions of young lives worldwide. Unfortunately, funding for these lifesaving programs is at risk now. ... We should not give up now on a great American achievement: helping more of the world's mothers and children survive," Rep. Donald Payne writes in Star-Ledger opinion piece that highlights the successes of U.S. global health programs.
