U.N. report calls for innovative ways to fund development initiatives

The U.N.'s annual World Economic and Social Survey, released last week, "says it is critical to find new ways to help the world's poor as pledged cash fails to flow" and "calls for a tax on billionaires to help raise more than $400 billion a year for poor countries," Agence France-Presse reports.

Mass. bill would lift gift ban; Workers rally in Md., Minn.

"A two-year-old state ban on gifts in the medical and pharmaceutical industries would be repealed under an economic development bill that the House budget committee began polling its members on yesterday. The ban, which prohibits drug firms from giving gifts and meals to health care professionals, has cut back on local business profits, a summary of the bill states. When it passed as part of a broader health care bill in 2008, supporters called it a way of curbing pharmaceutical companies' influence" (O'Sullivan, 6/25).

Delphi Genetics SA has announced today a broad licensing agreement with a subsidiary of Merck & Co., Inc., known as MSD outside the United States and Canada, for the use of the StabyExpress technology, which allows high yield, cost effective protein expression without the use of antibiotics.

Budget agreement preserves funding for Planned Parenthood, Title X and the health law

President Obama and Democratic and Republican congressional leaders reached a last-minute deal Friday to avoid a government shutdown. The agreement, which came after days of partisan sparring and rhetorical drama, would fund the government through the end of September and cut $78.5 billion compared to Obama's proposed but never enacted fiscal 2011 budget.
