Politico: "'Today, we mark an important milestone on the road to health insurance reform and higher education reform,' Obama said in a speech on the Alexandria campus of Northern Virginia Community College. 'But more broadly, this day affirms our ability to overcome the challenges of our politics and meet the challenges of our time.' Obama's bill-signings came as he entered the hard-sell phase of his sweeping campaign for heath care reform.
Results from a clinical study conducted at the Temple University School of Medicine and published today in the journal Postgraduate Medicine(1), show that a pre-packaged, portion controlled meal plan helped overweight individuals with type 2 diabetes lose significantly more weight and reduce their A1C test scores (a 90-day measure of blood sugar control) by almost a full point greater than those following a standard hospital-based diabetes support and education program, according to the findings.
Talecris Biotherapeutics, Inc. (TLCR) announced today that it has been granted orphan drug designation by the European Commission for the development of Plasmin (human) to treat acute peripheral arterial occlusion (aPAO). Talecris is currently investigating Plasmin in a phase II clinical trial designed to assess its ability to treat aPAO, a condition in which arterial blood flow to the extremities, usually the legs, is blocked by a clot.
KLOX Technologies Inc. is pleased to announce that it has received CE mark approval in Europe for its topical photo-converter gel as a Class IIa Medical Device for the treatment of acne vulgaris, including all severities. The gel is part of KLOX's LumiCleanse System, a first-in-class innovative, non-invasive acne vulgaris treatment with a clinically-proven superior safety and efficacy profile. The LumiCleanseTM System was previously approved for the treatment of all severities of acne vulgaris in Canada in September of this year.
The findings will contribute to a better understanding of the pathogenesis of widespread diseases such as Alzheimer's, depression, diabetes, chronic lung diseases or cancer. Over the next five years, the eight EUCOMMTOOLS partners, coordinated by Professor Wolfgang Wurst of Helmholtz Zentrum M-nchen, will receive research funding amounting to approximately 12 million euros from the European Commission.
