An increasing number of highly educated women are opting for families, according to a national study co-authored by a University at Buffalo economist.
Mosquito samples collected by Maricopa County health officials in the East Valley have tested positive for the West Nile virus, marking the arrival of the virus in the state in 2004.
A prospective study of initially healthy women aged 45 and over found that smoking is a potent risk factor for symptomatic peripheral artery disease, or PAD. PAD is a serious, often debilitating disorder, caused by narrowing of the arteries in the lower extremities. Symptoms of PAD include pain in the legs with normal activity and a feeling of tiredness in the leg muscles.
Endemic in 101 countries, malaria affects an estimated 200-300 million people per year resulting in over 2 million deaths the majority of these being children. The World Health Organisation have calculated that a child under 5 years of age dies from malaria every 30 seconds. In simplistic terms, three factors have been identified as major reasons for these fatalities.
In his latest Kaiser Health News column, Philip Klein writes: "For liberals, the legislation doesn't go far enough. And in the coming years, they will continue to push for tighter regulations on insurance companies, higher subsidies for purchasing coverage and for the inclusion of a government-run plan in the exchanges.
