As the newest statistics from the CDC show, diabetes is an ever increasing problem for Americans. Almost 26 million adults in this country now have diabetes, an increase of 9% since 2008. Ninety to 95% of cases are type 2 diabetes, marked by a gradual inability of the body's cells to respond to insulin, and eventually an inability to produce enough insulin. In addition, almost 79 million people in this country have prediabetes. The CDC has warned that if diabetes continues on its current course, it could affect a third of all adult Americans by 2050.

Individuals who smoke mentholated cigarettes do not develop lung cancer

Individuals who smoke mentholated cigarettes are no more likely to develop lung cancer or to die from the disease than smokers of non-mentholated cigarettes, according to a new study led by William Blot, Ph.D., professor of Medicine, Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center, Nashville, Tenn., and colleagues at VICC, Meharry Medical College, Nashville, and the International Epidemiology Institute, Rockville, Md.

National survey shows that most women don't know risks or symptoms of stroke

A national survey released today by The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center shows that most women don't know the risks or symptoms females face when it comes to having a stroke.

Reducing malnutrition among refugees in South Sudan

"A combined effort by health, water, sanitation and nutrition partners, including the World Food Programme (WFP), to reduce alarming malnutrition rates amongst Sudanese refugees who have settled in Maban County of South Sudan, is beginning to yield fruit," WFP reports in an article on its webpage, adding, "Parents say they have seen dramatic improvements in their children's health."
