Placing an implantable cardioverter defibrillator in kidney dialysis patients as a preventative measure is of little benefit.
A new study conducted at Columbia University Medical Center has revealed some of the underlying mechanisms that may increase the risk of heart disease in people with sleep apnea. The study also found that statins - the cholesterol-lowering medications commonly prescribed to combat heart disease - may help reverse this process.
The National Trauma Institute (NTI), a non-profit organization dedicated to funding trauma research in the United States, launched a powerful awareness and giving campaign in the heart of New York City today. While the images in the 15-second message may disturb some, trauma surgeon and NTI chairperson Dr. Timothy Fabian said, "We can't ignore the bloody truth—traumatic injury kills more than 170,000 people each year, not counting our soldiers overseas. Action is needed."
The risk for cervical precancer and cancer is similar in HIV-infected and HIV-uninfected women with normal cervical cytology and no evidence of oncogenic human papillomavirus infection, research shows.
Indiana University School of Medicine researchers are participating in the Rare and Atypical Diabetes Network (RADIANT), a nationwide study funded by the National Institutes of Health. The study seeks to discover new forms of diabetes, identify their causes, and understand how they differ from more common types of diabetes.
