As a result of dominant media coverage of new epidemic threats such as swine influenza, other infection risks receive less public attention than they deserve. "We would like to bring to everybody's attention that the infectious diseases with the most severe consequences continue to be old acquaintances such as tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, malaria and hepatitis C. Covidien plc and Somanetics Corporation today announced that they have signed a definitive merger agreement under which Covidien will acquire all of the outstanding shares of Somanetics Corporation for $25.00 per share in cash, for a total of $250 million, net of cash acquired.
The Japanese nuclear crisis has caused a surge in the demand of potassium iodide, causing shortages not only in Japan, but as far away as California, western Canada, and even southeastern Russia.
