Contradicting claims of disease prevention, an analysis of previous studies indicates that the antioxidant supplements beta carotene, vitamin A, and vitamin E may increase the risk of death, according to a meta-analysis and review article in the February 28 issue of JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association.
A proof-of-concept study carried out at UCL Institute of Ophthalmology with funding from Fight for Sight has highlighted the potential of a targeted antisense oligonucleotide therapy to treat Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy patients with a mutation in the TCF4 gene.
With more than 35 million people worldwide living with the virus and nearly 2 million new cases each year, the human immunodeficiency virus remains a major global epidemic.
Two studies provide additional support for lowering systolic blood pressure to an intensive goal of 120 mmHg – far below the standard guidelines of 140 mmHg – to reduce the risk of heart disease in high-risk patients with hypertension.
