It's clear where the black-and-white striped zebrafish got its name, but less obvious at first glance is what zebrafish has to do with biomedical research. Amazingly, it has biological similarities to humans, which are making this small freshwater fish an increasingly popular model organism for studying vertebrate development, genetics, physiology, and mechanisms of disease.
Ampio Pharmaceuticals, Inc., a biopharmaceutical company conducting clinical trials on its three lead drugs (Zertane completed two phase III studies, Ampion-completed proof of concept studies and Optina), licensing distribution of these drugs and engaged in further drug development, today announced that it completed the planned interim review of the first 50% of patients enrolled in the Optina trial for diabetic macular edema.
A new drug combination could offer hope to children with neuroblastoma - one of the deadliest forms of childhood cancer - by boosting the effectiveness of a promising new gene-targeted treatment.
