The St. Jude Children's Research Hospital-Washington University Pediatric Cancer Genome Project reports that a highly aggressive form of leukemia in infants has surprisingly few mutations beyond the chromosomal rearrangement that affects the MLL gene. The findings suggest that targeting the alteration is likely the key to improved survival.
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences has awarded LSU Health New Orleans a $10 million grant over five years to support new basic research studies advancing the development new diagnostic and therapeutic approaches for virus-induced cancers.
A new study showed that women experience more intense pain than men. The study published in the Jan. 23 issue of the Journal of Pain, further suggests that greater effort is needed to recruit women into studies in order to determine the reasons for this gender difference. The Stanford University School of Medicine investigators examined pain scores from tens of thousands of patients in the United States.
Henry Ford Health System's Department of Neurosurgery was awarded a $600,000 grant by the Department of Defense to study the genetic makeup of gliomas, a type of brain cancer, in hope of identifying new therapies.
