Viking Therapeutics, Inc., a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel, first-in-class or best-in-class therapies for metabolic and endocrine disorders, today announced the successful completion of a short-term safety, tolerability, and pharmacokinetic study of VK5211 in healthy elderly subjects. VK5211, the company's lead program for muscle and bone disorders, is an orally available, non-steroidal selective androgen receptor modulator (SARM) being developed for the treatment of patients recovering from non-elective hip fracture surgery.
Ovarian cancer is notoriously difficult to diagnose and treat, making it an especially fatal disease. Researchers at University of California, San Diego School of Medicine and Moores Cancer Center have now identified six mRNA isoforms (bits of genetic material) produced by ovarian cancer cells but not normal cells, opening up the possibility that they could be used to diagnose early-stage ovarian cancer.
At the European Society of Cardiology, ESC Congress 1 last weekend, Spanish researchers working as part of the long term project Seguimiento Universidad de Navarra (SUN) Project, presented their new study that suggests coffee intake might be tied to a longer life. The study included around 20,000 Spanish participants.
Joseph M. Lane, M.D., an orthopedic surgeon nationally recognized for his work in metabolic bone disease, will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at the hospital's 28th Annual Tribute Dinner on Monday, June 20, for his innovative research on bone disease and the use of bisphosphonates in treating osteoporosis. Brian Williams, anchor of Nightly News on NBC, will serve as toastmaster.
