In a breakthrough study, scientists at the Rockefeller University have observed the effects of Huntington's disease in neurons as early as conception.
Researchers at La Jolla Institute for Allergy & Immunology (LIAI) have identified two molecules (TL and CD8aa) that cooperate to trigger immune cells to develop into long-lived memory cells to fight recurring infections. This finding may have important implications for the future development of longer lasting and more potent vaccines for viruses such as HIV and West Nile.
Discovery Laboratories, Inc., reports preliminary results from its Phase 2 clinical trial of Surfaxin® in children with Acute Respiratory Failure (ARF), a critical condition often caused in children by severe respiratory infections. The objective of the study was to evaluate the safety and tolerability of intratracheal administration of Surfaxin and to assess whether Surfaxin treatment could decrease the duration of mechanical ventilation in children with ARF.
Professor Dieter Wolke and Dr Kirsty Lee, in the Department of Psychology, discovered that teenagers who are involved in bullying in any way - from bullies, to their victims, to those who both bully and get bullied - are more likely to develop concerns about their eating and exercise behaviours, and become preoccupied with losing weight.
