In an abrupt about-face, House Republican leaders agreed Thursday to a Senate proposal to extend the payroll tax cut and avert a scheduled payment cut to Medicare doctors for two months to allow lawmakers time to hammer out a longer-term agreement after the holidays.
Most children and teenagers carry their schoolbooks and other supplies in backpacks during the school year. "When used correctly, backpacks are the most efficient way to carry a load and distribute the weight among some of the body's strongest muscles," says Eric Wall, MD, Division of Orthopaedic Surgery.
"Tobacco use kills at least 5 million people every year, a figure that could rise if countries don't take stronger measures to combat smoking, the World Health Organization said Wednesday," during the release its Global Tobacco Epidemic report, the Associated Press reports (Cheng, 12/9).
The potential for harmful side effects associated with anti-psychotic medications for treating schizophrenia is a frustration for mental-health professionals who must balance this with the positive benefits of drugs. For example, the issue of the antipsychotic drug ziprasidone lengthening the QTc interval, a possible indicator of life-threatening heart arrhythmias, has demanded much attention among clinicians since the drug was introduced in 2001.
