The first few days after birth is an important time when babies learn to recognize the sound of their parents' voice and the parents in turn bond with their children. Thanks to decades of scientific research, almost everyone knows that milk offers many health benefits and is an essential part of a healthy diet. Ongoing research continues to find amazing properties of milk that may surprise even the most dedicated milk drinker.
As the nation copes with a shortage of vaccines for H1N1 influenza, a team of Alabama researchers have raised hopes that they have found an Achilles' heel for all strains of the flu-antioxidants. In an article appearing in the November 2009 print issue of the FASEB Journal (http://www.fasebj.org) they show that antioxidants-the same substances found in plant-based foods-might hold the key in preventing the flu virus from wreaking havoc on our lungs.
Minnesota dentists will provide free dental care to less fortunate children on Friday, February 5 and Saturday, February 6 at nearly 200 locations statewide. The Minnesota Dental Association is sponsoring this unique outreach effort, called Give Kids a Smile, for the 8th consecutive year. Appointments are being scheduled now.
The researchers are the first to identify a population of cells with characteristics of adult and embryonic stem cells in cultures derived from biopsies of patients' bone tumors. They describe their findings in the medical journal Neoplasia.
