We all know that pulling all-nighters, being overly caffeinated and overly stimulated have become a part of college life, but the reality is that even as school-age children are dealing with these scenarios.
Modern Healthcare: "Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) has sent a letter asking 31 hospitals to report on their relationships with healthcare IT vendors, focusing on errors caused by IT systems and on so-called 'gag order or non-disclosure clauses' in vendor contracts that might prohibit the hospitals from disclosing information about system flaws." Grassley made a similar request to the IT vendors themselves last fall, and said his new letter was prompted by concern about taxpayers' investment in health IT as part of the economic stimulus (Conn, 1/20).
Scientists at the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases (NIAMS), a part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), demonstrate for the first time in a mouse model that skeletal muscle cells cultured in a low-calorie environment refrain from differentiating, an energy-demanding process by which cells mature and specialize.
The Atlantic examines the issue of violence against pregnant women in India. "In the aftermath of the high-profile gang rape of a 23-year-old medical student, discussions have raged in India about the regularity of violence against women," the magazine writes, adding, "As has been widely noted, the causes of the violence run deep. But they also are broad."
In the July 2018 issue of SLAS Discovery, a review article summarizes new methods of fragment-based lead discovery to identify new compounds as potential antibiotics.
