A majority of Americans say they expect to pay more in federal taxes over their lifetime than they will ever receive in benefits from the government, according to a recent New York Times poll. At the same time, the taxes Americans pay today are not keeping pace with the growing costs of government. Medicare is the program projected to add the most to federal spending over the next decade, likely increasing the government's annual budget deficits. But only one in five Americans surveyed named Medicare as the fastest-growing benefits program.
CivaTech Oncology, an RTP medical device company dedicated to developing novel radiation therapy devices, announced the award of a $1M Phase II Contract from the National Institutes of Health and the National Cancer Institute to further develop and commercialize CivaSheet, a bioabsorbable uni-directional device for treatment of non-small-cell lung cancer.
Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc. and Eisai Inc. announced today that the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has notified the company of the confirmed scheduling of an Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committee meeting on September 16, 2010, for the review of the lorcaserin New Drug Application (NDA). Lorcaserin, which Arena discovered and has developed for weight management, is intended for obese patients as well as overweight patients who have at least one weight-related co-morbid condition.
Cancer diagnostics company Biomoda, Inc. received Notice of Allowance for a U.S. Patent application on a quantitative method for scoring cells labeled with the CyPath assay to determine whether cells are dysplastic or carcinomic by measuring the photon emission rate.
An Ohio woman, 40-year-old Carolyn Savage, claims a fertility clinic implanted the wrong embryo and that the baby she's due to deliver the first week in October is not hers. Several media reports state Savage and her husband plan to give the baby boy to his biological parents. The name of the clinic is not being released in this very rare alleged case.
