It started with a simple medical survey in the Humboldt Park neighborhood on Chicago's near Northwest side whose results were reported in the Journal of Epidemiology in 2006.
Ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Laurence Chandy and Geoffrey Gert, both of the Brookings Institution's Global Economy and Development program, reflect on "Poverty's Success Story," a Washington Post opinion piece. They note that the last time the World Bank issued global poverty statistics (the number of people in the world living on less than $1.25 each day) was 2005.
For years now, America has been spending more money than we take in. The result is that we have too much debt on our nation's credit card — debt that will ultimately weaken our economy, lead to higher interest rates for all Americans, and leave us unable to invest in things like education, or protect vital programs like Medicare.
A few years from now millions of people around the world might be walking around with an unusual kind of glass in their mouth, and using it every time they eat.
In this post in the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation's "Impatient Optimists" blog, Gary Darmstadt, head of the Family Health Division at the foundation; Wolfgang Munar, senior program officer in the Family Health Division; and Amie Newman, a communications officer and editor of the blog, highlight a recently published paper, "A model for scale up of family health innovations in low-income settings: a mixed methods study," that proposes a framework to scale up successful maternal and newborn health interventions in order to "reach more communities and improve the health of many more people."
