With money tight, congressional appropriators rarely insist that agencies spend money. Yet the omnibus spending bill passed Dec. 17 approved $100 million for a joint Pentagon and Department of Veterans Affairs effort to develop digital medical records -; even though they missed deadlines for requesting the money.
The Financial Times reports on a legal dispute between the Indian government and the German pharmaceutical group Bayer, writing, "Bayer is appealing against the Indian patent controller's decision in March to override the company's monopoly on its cancer drug Nexavar, and to allow an Indian company to produce and sell the life-extending drug for just $173 a month - one-sixth of the $5,500 a month price charged by Bayer."
A new blood test, measuring the level of omega-3 fatty acids in red blood cells, is now broadly available for the first time to the public everywhere as a consumer-friendly, at-home "finger stick" test. While scientists have long known of the benefits of fish and fish oil for overall heart health, over the past decade research has proven that the omega-3 fatty acids found in fish dramatically reduce one's risk for cardiovascular disease. Further, recent research indicates that omega-3 levels may be among the best predictors of future coronary heart disease - providing much stronger correlations to the risk of sudden cardiac death than traditional indicators, including HDL and LDL cholesterol.
To attract and maintain a diverse, qualified academic workforce, institutions of higher education should have - and promote - policies to help balance career and family life, according to an article published by UC Davis researchers in the June 2013 issue of Academic Medicine.
