In a study published this week in PLOS Genetics, scientists Nareg J. Djabrayan and Jordi Casanova from the Institute for Research in Biomedicine and CSIC, have identified two molecular signals and the pathway of events that allows cells in a tissue that are already specialized to regain their behaviour as stem cells.
In a letter to the CEOs of UnitedHealth Group Inc., WellPoint Inc., Aetna Inc., Health Care Service Corporation and CIGNA HealthCare Inc., U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius called on the executives to publicly justify proposed health insurance premium increases. Sebelius' letter comes after a meeting last week with these executives at the White House.
"Try after try to make vaginal creams that could repel the AIDS virus have failed. Now researchers are testing if a drug used to treat HIV infection finally might give women a tool to prevent it - by infusing the medicine into vaginal gels and contraceptive-style rings," the Associated Press reports in a piece that examines researchers' latest efforts to create effective HIV microbicides, ahead of the biennial International Microbicides Conference next weekend.
"Supplies - the essential medicines and medical equipment frontline health workers need to successfully do their jobs - are a vital part of the solution to saving the lives of mothers and newborns," Catharine Taylor, a maternal health expert with PATH, writes in the Huffington Post's "Global Motherhood" blog, adding, "And yet, they are frequently overlooked in the ongoing conversation about how to improve maternal health in the developing world."
