Researchers studying epidemiology of healthcare-associated infections in community hospitals in the southeast U.S. found that rates of Clostridium difficile infections (CDI) surpassed infection rates for methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). Scientists also discovered that healthcare-associated CDI, which is a bacterium that causes diarrhea and more serious intestinal conditions such as colitis, occurs more often (21 percent) than healthcare-associated infections due to MRSA.
The Western Region Public Health Training Center at the University of Arizona Mel and Enid Zuckerman College of Public Health, in collaboration with the UA College of Nursing, has received a $1.49 million, three-year federal grant to provide sexual assault nurse examiners training and certification to expand services to sexual assault victims in rural areas.
Abbott today announced the European approval and launch of its TREK™ Coronary Dilatation Catheter for the treatment of coronary artery disease. The TREK system represents a new approach to balloon catheter design, and provides physicians with a high-performing option for treating challenging lesions and difficult-to-reach blockages. Abbott received CE Mark for the TREK system earlier this year.
Canary Foundation announces its first researcher, Nicole Urban, Sc.D., and collaborators are awarded 5 years of renewed funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for the Pacific Ovarian Cancer Research Consortium (POCRC) Specialized Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE). The SPORE grant will allow Dr. Urban and fellow researchers to continue work in locating tumor markers and developing blood tests to identify and assess risk and early detection of ovarian cancer. The Listwin Family Foundation and Canary Foundation have been funding Dr. Urban's research since 2002.
