Johnson & Johnson (China) Investment Ltd. today announced it has acquired Guangzhou Bioseal Biotechnology Co., Ltd. (Bioseal) a privately held biopharmaceutical company specializing in the design, development and commercialization of a porcine plasma-derived biologic product for controlling bleeding during surgery.
The Avon Foundation announced $275,000 in grants to The George Washington University (GW) School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) and GW Cancer Institute (GWCI), at the close of the 11th annual Avon Walk for Breast Cancer in Washington, D.C.
Two pediatric patients in Pennsylvania hospitals received overdoses of the drug Tamiflu to treat their flu symptoms because of unawareness among staff as to the concentration of the drug given in an alternative liquid form. Both children were unharmed as a result of the errors, but details of the near misses have been published in a supplementary Pennsylvania Patient Safety Advisory to raise awareness of the issue.
The statistics are frightening: one-third of the world's smokers (300 million) live in China, and chronic diseases caused by smoking are a growing burden to public health there. Current projections estimate that the number of tobacco-related deaths in China will increase to 2 million annually by 2025.
Large employers, many of which already provide coverage to full-time workers, cheered the news because it would relieve them of complex new reporting requirements. Businesses with fewer than 50 employees are not subject to the coverage mandate.
