Scientists have long known that circadian clocks- biochemical oscillators that control physiology, metabolism and behavior on a roughly 24-hour cycle- are present in all forms of life, including animals, plants, fungi and some types of bacteria. However, the molecular mechanisms that "run" these systems remain largely unknown.
Long segments of RNA- encoded in our DNA but not translated into protein-are key to physically manipulating DNA in order to activate certain genes, say researchers at The Wistar Institute. These non-coding RNA-activators (ncRNA-a) have a crucial role in turning genes on and off during early embryonic development, researchers say, and have also been connected with diseases, including some cancers, in adults.
CapitalSource, one of the leading commercial lenders in the United States, said today it is providing a $71 million senior loan to Tri-City Medical Center, a 397-bed, acute care hospital serving the North Coastal San Diego region of California.
Researchers have engineered living bone tissue to repair bone loss in the jaw, a structure that is typically difficult to restore.
