Scripps Whittier Diabetes Institute has received a five-year, $2.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health to fund an innovative clinical trial that will use mHealth technology and text messaging to improve type 2 diabetes management among high-risk Hispanic patients in San Diego County.
The U.S. federal government is preparing to launch a set of sweeping new regulations that will have a major impact on how biomedical researchers and social scientists work. It will require researchers to change how they get ethics approval, how they collect informed consent from participants, and more.
The Wilson Medical Center Board of Directors has taken the next step in becoming part of Duke LifePoint Healthcare. The organizations have signed a definitive agreement to form a joint venture. The proposed joint venture, which will provide Wilson Medical Center with resources to enhance its services and invest in its growth, is moving forward following a positive vote by the Wilson County Board of Commissioners. The agreement is under review by the Attorney General of North Carolina.
Tools that allow neuroscientists to record and quantify functional activity within the living brain are in great demand. Traditionally, researchers have used techniques such as functional magnetic resonance imaging, but this method cannot record neural activity with high spatial resolution or in moving subjects.
Directly observed therapy (DOTS) - the main strategy for tuberculosis control - can rapidly reduce the transmission and incidence of the drug resistant form of the disease, concludes a study published in this week's issue of The Lancet.
