Call it Paul Ryan's 0.5 percent solution. In a little-noticed but vital change last spring, the House Budget Committee chairman cut half a point from the annual growth rate he had allowed for Medicare spending.
When you think back on your childhood, chances are there's a rich montage of sights and sounds that comes to mind. But, imagine if you couldn't have heard the ding of the ice cream truck or the sound of a barking dog – how would that have impacted the experiences of your youth?
Imagine being able to contribute to research about heart problems affecting children and adults with an iPhone app. That idea is now a reality with today's launch of the Yale Cardiomyopathy Index, an iPhone-based clinical study to better understand quality of life for people ages two to 80 who have or may develop a cardiomyopathy - an abnormality in the heart muscle.
Healthy donor feces is a life-saving therapy. In addition, the treatment provides huge cost savings. When used in the right intestines, feces transplantations saves at least USD 1.2 million (EUR 1.1 million) each time fifty patients are treated for the deadly diarrhea infection Clostridium difficile at a public hospital.
Non-white race and lack of education are known risk factors for pain and poorer function after knee replacement surgery. What isn't clear is how a community's poverty level affects the outcomes of having a joint replaced. Findings from a new study conducted by researchers from Hospital for Special Surgery suggest that lower socioeconomic status at the community level significantly increases the risk of pain and poor function following a knee replacement.
