Most patients experience significant distress after they are diagnosed with cancer. This distress not only erodes quality of life, but can also negatively affect the course of the disease and the patient's ability to tolerate treatment.
Noting that former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in June 2012 "announced a new partnership to address the persistent burden of maternal mortality, called Saving Mothers, Giving Life," which aims "to reduce maternal mortality by 50 percent in eight districts in Zambia and Uganda in just one year," Karen Grepin, assistant professor of global health policy at New York University's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, writes in her "Global Health Blog,"
Dr Gervase Chaney, the head of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians' Pediatric & Child Health Division, said it was no longer OK for mums and dads to argue "that it never did us any harm" and called on colleagues to stand up for children's rights. Professor Frank Oberklaid, a pediatrician from Melbourne's Royal Children's Hospital, said Australia was lagging behind other countries in outlawing smacking which, in some cases, could lead to abuse and even death.
Doctors.net.uk, a professional networking site, found that 593 (54%) of the 1,096 doctors who took part in the self-selecting survey answered yes when asked: "Should the NHS be allowed to refuse non-emergency treatments to patients unless they lose weight or stop smoking?" They believe unhealthy behaviour can make procedures less likely to work, and that the service is not obliged to devote scarce resources to them.
Eisai Inc. announced today that the Phase III ACCESS (A Controlled Comparison of Eritoran and Placebo in Patients with Severe Sepsis) trial of the investigational compound eritoran (E5564) will continue enrolling to the preset goal of 2,000 patients. As part of a planned interim analysis, an independent Data Monitoring Committee (DMC) has evaluated efficacy and safety data on the first 1,500 subjects to complete the 28-day follow-up in the Phase III ACCESS trial.
