The Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS (PACHA) provides advice, information, and recommendations for dealing with the dreaded illness in the United States. PACHA was formed in 1995 under the Clinton administration. PACHA was a follow up of President Ronald Reagan's 1987 President's Commission on the HIV Epidemic and 1988's National Commission on AIDS.
On Sept. 23 and 24, the Hyatt Regency in New Brunswick, N.J. will host Contracting & Outsourcing 2010, the 9th annual Conference and Tabletop Exhibition held by Contract Pharma Magazine. This year's Conference will feature a keynote presentation by Mac Lynch, Vice President, Contract Manufacturing at Pfizer, covering Global Pharma Outsourcing Trends. Other speakers and panelists represent FDA, Johnson & Johnson, Roche/Genentech, Bristol-Myers Squibb, Merck, GlaxoSmithKline and more.
Middle school students are more likely to feel safer, less bullied and less lonely in ethnically diverse schools, psychologists from UCLA and UC Davis report in a new study of more than 70 sixth-grade classrooms in 11 Los Angeles public middle schools with predominantly minority and low-income students.
A series of new studies led by scientists at The Scripps Research Institute and the International AIDS Vaccine Initiative describe a potential vaccination strategy to jump-start the selection and evolution of broadly effective antibodies to prevent HIV infection.
The Wall Street Journal reports that "an examination of one of the best-known examples of a comparative-effectiveness analysis shows how complicated such a seemingly straightforward idea can get" as officials look for savings in the health care system." One study, called Courage, "found that the most common heart surgery - a $15,000 procedure that unclogs arteries using a small scaffold or stent - usually yields no additional benefit when used with a cocktail of generic drugs in patients suffering from chronic chest pain."
