A new study presented at ANESTHESIOLOGY 2011 focused on whether blood type affects survival after heart surgery. Over the past year, 1,220 hospitals participating in the Premier healthcare alliance's group buy program have identified $81 million in savings through access to high-quality products at low costs.
Stem cells are ideal tools to understand disease and develop new treatments; however, they can be difficult to obtain in necessary quantities. In particular, generating induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells can be an arduous task because reprogramming differentiated adult skin cells into iPS cells requires many steps and the efficiency is very low - researchers might end up with only a few iPS cells even if they started with a million skin cells.
Independent studies done by universities and corporations have illustrated a remarkable increase in the yield of viable stem cells after cryopreservation using AAGP™ in the freeze-thaw process. One future approach to increasing diabetics' insulin production is related to an ability to convert their stem cells into islet cells for transplantation. The feasibility of this procedure is dependent upon the amount of functioning islet cells that can be derived from the patient's stem cells. This is where AAGP™ can make a very beneficial contribution.
