An Institute of Medicine panel recommended a new tax on medical care to generate more funding for public health initiatives to help prevent disease.
The American Federation of Government Employees today told Congress that the Department of Veterans Affairs' over reliance on private for-profit health care providers is straining medical center budgets and jeopardizing veterans' health care. AFGE represents 180,000 employees on the frontlines of the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA).
According to a new analysis by cardiologists at the Duke Clinical Research Institute, in the prescribing of common but powerful anti-clotting drugs, 42 percent of patients rushed to emergency rooms with symptoms of a heart attack received doses intended to stop clotting in coronary arteries above the recommended range.
Cancer Research UK scientists have been part of an international collaboration that has revealed the structure of a protein found in simple yeast cells and shown how it flags up damaged DNA for repair. The results of their study are published in Nature*. The finding may provide clues as to how some cancer cells become resistant to certain chemotherapy drugs.
