According to U.S. researchers the speed of a person's walk may predict the likelihood of developing dementia later in life. They also told a conference that grip strength in middle-age was linked to the chance of a stroke. The scientists said more studies were needed to understand the connection.
Howza (Tshepo Mosese), South African Kwaito star, presenter and actor, has launched a music video for his latest song "I choose to live" on November 10 in an effort to increase awareness of the impact of Diabetes in the world. Inspired by Howza's own story of living with diabetes the song describes the distressing impact diabetes is having on the world and the importance of prevention. Researchers in the School of Medicine at the University of California, Riverside have identified an immune protein in mice that is quickly triggered in the body following infection and serves to protect the body's tissues. Called "RELMalpha," this protein, whose homologue in humans is called "resistin," is responsible more for protecting the body than attacking the parasite.
New insight into the physiology of cardiac muscle may lead to the development of therapeutic strategies that exploit an inherent protective state of the heart. The research, published by Cell Press online on April 19th in the Biophysical Journal, discovers a state of cardiac muscle that exhibits a low metabolic rate and may help to regulate energy use and promote efficiency in this hard-working and vital organ.
