Women are playing a greater and greater role in medicine. But when it comes to salaries, they're actually losing ground. A provocative study in the current issue of the journal Health Affairs finds female physicians' average starting salaries earned nearly $17,000 less than their male counterparts' in 2008.
President Obama "has made some good headway on foreign aid in his first term, producing the government's first global development policy and an innovative new policy on disaster resilience, launching new efforts to combat global hunger, supporting reforms to the U.S. Agency for International Development and committing to greater aid transparency," Jeremy Konyndyk, director of policy and advocacy at Mercy Corps, writes in a Huffington Post opinion piece, part of "The Road Forward" series.
Tumor cells collected during the removal of a cancerous bladder and - in some cases - transplanted into mice with weakened immune systems, could help physicians rapidly identify high-risk cancers, determine prognosis and refine the use of biomarkers to personalize care for patients with this common cancer, according to a study published online on Oct. 24, 2016, in Scientific Reports.
Cases of drug-resistant tuberculosis are forecasted to increase in the four high burden countries (India, the Philippines, Russia, and South Africa) between 2000 and 2040, with the upturn likely to be a result of increased transmission of drug-resistant tuberculosis between people, rather than by strains acquiring resistance to anti-tuberculosis drugs, according to a study published in The Lancet Infectious Diseases.
