As the warm summer months approach, the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) reminds City landlords and residents to install window guards to help prevent deaths and injuries from window falls. DOHMH today cited data showing an overall decrease in the number of preventable falls since Section 131.15 of the City's Health Code
U.S. black leaders on Monday at the XVI International AIDS Conference in Toronto pledged to make efforts to increase access to care and treatment for black U.S. residents and called for an urgent campaign to increase HIV testing and awareness among blacks in the country, the San Francisco Chronicle reports.
Researchers from the Gladstone Institutes have revealed that HIV does not cause AIDS by the virus's direct effect on the host's immune cells, but rather through the cells' lethal influence on one another.
Bladder cancer patients whose tumors express high levels of the protein CD24 have worse prognoses than patients with lower CD24. A University of Colorado Cancer Center study published today in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences shows that CD24 expression may depend on androgens - and that anti-androgen therapies like those currently used to treat prostate cancer may benefit bladder cancer patients.
Researchers at the University of Southampton are planning to investigate tests for a breathing disorder that affects babies and children who have Down syndrome while they sleep. They aim to provide the missing evidence so that doctors can introduce affordable and simple routine screening.
