America's hospitals treat patients with life-ending cancers very differently in their final months, with some deploying chemotherapy and other life-prolonging efforts until the end and others directing most of their patients into hospice, a new study finds.
Experts are horrified with the rise of numbers of diabetics worldwide. A staggering 366 million people around the world have either Type 1 or 2 diabetes, says the International Diabetes Federation. The disease has taken a deadly toll, causing 4.6 million deaths each year, or one death every seven seconds. The number of sufferers was pegged at 285 million worldwide in 2009. Since then, China reported 92.4 million people with the condition, more than double the federation's estimate. The diabetes epidemic is also heavy on healthcare spending, to the tune of $465 billion a year to fight the disease.
After a full year of feasibility studies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is taking a significant step toward providing public health information at the point-of-care. CDC is collaborating with GE Healthcare, a unit of General Electric Company, to explore the efficacy of actionable health alerts, delivered instantly to a physician's electronic medical record.
Barry University will receive a $225,000 grant from the Florida Blue Foundation to create and implement a two-year Statewide Nursing Leadership Development program. Over the grant period, a cohort of 32 nurse professionals from eight regions of Florida – East Central, Northeast, Northwest, North Central, Southeast, Southwest, South and West Central - will receive additional education about health policy and leadership in health care systems with a goal of enabling them to become more influential in the field.
It seems increasingly likely that health care politics will play an important role in the midterm elections come November. But unlike every election since 2010, this year finds the Democrats playing offense and the Republicans back on their heels.
