In a study of 158 pregnant teenagers in Rochester, NY, nearly half engaged in pica - the craving and intentional consumption of ice, cornstarch, vacuum dust, baby powder and soap, and other nonfood items, reports a new Cornell study.
"Proposed health care reform legislation now under consideration in Congress will add billions of dollars of un-reimbursed cost to the Medicare program to provide free interpreters for non-English speaking patients," says K.C. McAlpin, executive director of ProEnglish, a national organization that advocates for making English the official language of government in the United States.
The American Pain Society today endorsed the federal government's National Pain Strategy for its recommendations to better educate primary care physicians about pain and pain treatments, reduce stigma by increasing public awareness about pain and its overall impact on society, and expanding access to personalized multimodal and multidisciplinary pain care.
Gordon D. Rubenfeld, M.D., of the Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center, Toronto, Canada, and colleagues with the ARDS (acute respiratory distress syndrome) Definition Task Force, developed a new definition of ARDS (the Berlin Definition) that focused on feasibility, reliability, validity and objective evaluation of its performance.
