Teens who suffered iron deficiency as infants are likely to score lower on cognitive and motor tests, even if that iron deficiency was identified and treated in infancy, a new University of Michigan study shows.
Researchers at the Icahn School of Medicine, Mount Sinai, New York have reported a pilot clinical trial with a "nanoparticle-based photothermal cancer therapy" for prostate cancers. Their work with this targeted therapy is published in a study titled, "Gold nanoshell-localized photothermal ablation of prostate tumors in a clinical pilot device study," in the latest issue of the journal Proceedings of National Academy of Science.
A lung transplant to relieve Christopher Bryant Vera from devastating effects of cystic fibrosis marked the 500th lung transplant performed at UT Southwestern Medical Center, positioning the Center among an elite group of fewer than 25 in the country to achieve that benchmark.
The 2008 Virginia Commonwealth University Life Sciences survey shows that eight in 10 adults nationwide favor making genetic testing easily available to all who want it, and 54 percent say that the benefits of conducting genetic research outweigh the risks.
Strengthening the link between periodontal and heart disease, researchers at Boston University School of Medicine (BUSM) found they can prevent mice from developing P. gingivalis-accelerated heart disease by immunizing the mice with a vaccine that protects against periodontal disease.
