CNN reports on how "the issue of forced abortions - and in some cases, forced sterilizations - in China has seized the spotlight in recent days with news of escaped activist Chen Guangcheng," who "rose to fame in the late 1990s because of his advocacy for what he calls victims of abusive practices, such as forced abortions, by Chinese family planning officials." China's so-called "one-child policy has been blamed for abuses," the news service reports.
In a study published in Current Biology, scientists from the University of Rochester Medical Center, Marquette University and Oberlin College discovered a new way in which calcium signaling may be controlled. Study authors say their findings define a mechanism for regulating calcium signaling that has never been recognized before and should be of great help to the thousands of scientists who study the extremely important role of calcium signaling in health and disease.
The German Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care examined the benefit of a diagnostic-therapeutic strategy using urinary proteome analysis for detection of diabetic nephropathy (DN) versus a conventional diagnostic strategy in patients with diabetes mellitus and arterial hypertension. After publication of the preliminary report in June 2015, interested persons and parties had the opportunity to comment on the preliminary results.
The liver, the largest internal organ, is the body's ultimate multitasker. While the liver is not glamorous or sentimental - there are no love songs about a broken liver - it simultaneously plays a key role in the body's metabolic, digestive and regulatory systems.
Females often live longer than men - this is true for humans and for many other animal species. The phenomenon exists even when you adjust for male risky behavior which leads to more early male deaths than female (car accidents, wars, homocides, etc).
