UNITAID, an international drug financing program established to help fight HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria in developing countries, has raised about $2 billion since 2006 through taxes on airline tickets in 15 countries, Philippe Douste-Blazy, chair of the UNITAID executive board, told reporters in Washington on Wednesday, Agence France-Presse reports. According to Douste-Blazy, UNITAID's experience could provide a model for G20 development funding efforts.
A new study looking at how hospitals account for the number of pediatric patients who develop catheter associated bloodstream infections (CA-BSIs) found substantial inconsistencies in the methods used to report the number of patients who develop these infections.
Lawmakers who are pushing for foreign aid budget cuts and placing global health and food security programs outside the realm of national security are focused on "very short-term financial gains" and, in turn, are discounting the long-term benefits of helping societies cut their disease burdens, Julie Fischer, head of the Stimson Center's Global Health Security project, said in an interview Tuesday with the Kaiser Daily Global Health Policy Report's Jaclyn Schiff.
