The American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN) recently awarded a $50,000 AACN Impact Research Grant to Jean Anne Connor, RN, DNSc, CPNP, director of nursing research in the cardiovascular program at Children's Hospital Boston.
Nurses work in a world of broken systems, wasted time and energy, which can be incredibly frustrating and detrimental to patient care. Most national studies show that nurses spend as little as 30 percent of their day engaged in direct patient care activities, and this can contribute to poor patient outcomes in terms of infections and other complications, poor patient and nurse satisfaction and poor quality of care overall.
As early as 3 months of age, infants with a severe form of epilepsy called Dravet syndrome start having convulsive seizures, during which their arms and legs jerk repeatedly. As they become toddlers, another type of seizure begins to appear.
The New York Times on Sunday examined how Democrats - who for years "have been trying to stop the proliferation of doctor-owned hospitals in the belief that they drive up costs by encouraging doctors to order more procedures" - have moved to "impose new restrictions on these for-profit hospitals" as part of a Senate supplemental war appropriations bill, although they have "carved out exemptions for a few institutions represented by influential senators and well-connected lobbyists."
