The first long-term study shows that treatment with pyrimethamine and sulfadiazine (two anti-parasitic drugs) during the first year of life leads to a lasting reduction in brain and eye damage for children with congenital toxoplasmosis.
A Food and Drug Administration (FDA) panel created history by recommending a gene therapy for patients with cancer. In this therapy the patient's own genes would be modified to fight the cancer cells. The patient's cells which are thus altered to treat the cancer would thus be termed as "living drugs" as they act as soldiers to treat the cancer. These cells boost up the immune system and help the body fight the cancer.
Psychologists at the University of Toronto and the Georgia Institute of Technology - commonly known as Georgia Tech - have shown that an individual's inability to recognize once-familiar faces and objects may have as much to do with difficulty perceiving their distinct features as it does with the capacity to recall from memory.
Palliative care is not just about pain relief, albeit an important component, but embraces a wide range of patient care, with the aim of improving the quality of a patient's life and upholding his or her sense of dignity. Palliative care - not to be confused with 'care at any cost'- implies the involvement of patients' families, as active caregivers as well as people to take care of: their quality of life is also a primary objective.
