Michelson Diagnostics, the UK based medical device company focused on multi-beam Optical Coherence Tomography ('OCT') technology, has commenced a clinical study to investigate the use of OCT to diagnose basal cell carcinoma in collaboration with the Melanoma Institute of Australia using Michelson's Diagnostics VivoSight system.
Despite advances made in "sustained delivery" drug delivery technologies in recent years, a problem still persists in trying to obtain controlled release of a wide variety of medications that have only a "narrow absorption window" in the upper part of the intestines. That is, these drugs are absorbed rather quickly after being swallowed, negating the beneficial effects of "once-a-day" medication.
An international team of scientists — led by researchers from the University of Washington and two other institutions — has announced that a new compound to fight malaria is ready for human trials. In a new paper published July 15 in Science Translational Medicine, they show that this compound is the first to cripple a critical protein that the malaria parasite needs to survive at different stages of its complex life cycle, and is suitable for clinical tests in humans.
