Informatics Corporation of America announced today that it has been selected by the Central Illinois Health Information Exchange (CIHIE), www.qualityquest.org, as its health information exchange vendor of choice and has begun contract negotiations to furnish the technology and infrastructure for a regional HIE that will serve 20 counties in the Peoria, Bloomington, Champaign, and Decatur areas of Illinois.
A cross-disciplinary team including University of Texas at Austin statisticians Giorgio Paulon and Abhra Sarkar have received the Mitchell Prize, a top prize in the field, for their study modeling what happens in the brains of nonnative English speakers learning another language's tonal differences.
"Practice makes perfect" seems logical, but how much practice remains uncertain, and current health care quality guidelines may be set too high. It may be time to reexamine the standard recommending hospitals perform at least 400 angioplasty and stent procedures per year, according to a new study in the May 19, 2004 issue of the Journal of the American College of Cardiology.
Lung cancer is associated with very high mortality, in part because it is hard to detect at early stages, but also because it can recur frequently after surgical removal.
The Air Force's top uniformed officer on Tuesday warned that growing healthcare costs could hurt other critical military needs. Schwartz said that the Pentagon pays $40 billion in healthcare costs for military members and retirees, and is expected to pay as much as $60 billion by 2015 about 13 percent of the entire Pentagon budget.
