Glycogen storage disorders, which affect the body's ability to process sugar and store energy, are rare metabolic conditions that frequently manifest in the first years of life. Often accompanied by liver and muscle disease, this inability to process and store glucose can have many different causes, and can be difficult to diagnose.
This post in the State Department's "DipNote" blog looks at Fatima Jinnah Women's Hospital, "one of more than 80 Pakistani medical facilities that the United States has helped renovate in recent years in Pakistan" and describes how medical personnel at the facility "demonstrated the benefits that new equipment and training opportunities have made to their standard of care on Thursday, August 18, as U.S. Agency for International Development Mission Director Andrew Sisson toured the facility."
The growing number of Americans with cardiovascular disease has caused a heightened sensitivity in the evaluation of chest pain. In a study published in the April issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings researchers reported that patients dismissed from the hospital with noncardiac chest pain continue to experience cardiac events, which may highlight a need for more aggressive cardiovascular risk factor management in this population.
Now that the CMS has released its final rule on the "meaningful use" criteria for Electronic Medical Record systems, what should hospitals do next? According to William Bria, president of the Association of Medical Directors of Information Systems, "We need to start to focus not on the most exotic examples of information sharing, but on the more simplistic ones."
