A practical resource guide for internists on recently-enacted health care reform legislation, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, was released today by the American College of Physicians. Scientists have found out the basis of what we already knew – spinach is good for us. They have found that it is the nitrates in spinach that are abundant in all green leafy vegetables that boosts the powerhouses in cells which provide energy. In fact a single helping of spinach is enough to increase the efficiency of mitochondria. These are small bean-shaped bodies which fuel cell activity and growth. This explains how Popeye the Sailor man – a famous cartoon character, who dates back to the 1930s, gets his power from a can of spinach.
Rates of intensive care unit use in the last month of life among patients aged 65 years and older increased between 2000 and 2009 in the USA, despite a reduction in rates of in-hospital death, conflating the notion that there is a trend toward less aggressive care, say researchers.
Most patients with an inherited heart condition known as arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia/cardiomyopathy (ARVD/C) don't know they have a problem until they're in their early 20s. The lack of symptoms at younger ages makes it very difficult for researchers to study how ARVD/C evolves or to develop treatments. A new stem cell-based technology created by 2012 Nobel Prize winner Shinya Yamanaka, M.D., Ph.D., helps solve this problem.
